A Shavuos celebration brought spiritual renewal to Jewish inmates at Rikers Island, opening with heartfelt Tehillim led by Rabbis Yossi Hecht and Levi Liberow, followed by an inmate reading a letter from the Rebbe about the holiday.
A moment of silence set the tone before the room shifted into celebration. Live music from Yanky Horowitz and Shlomo Recu filled the space, with vocalists Shraga Gold and Shmuly Tevel leading participants in dancing. A violin performance by Gregory Gontmacher drew particular appreciation.
Rabbi Yossi Altein conducted a workshop on Torah scroll creation — parchment, quill, ink — and walked participants through each step. Questions came quickly. The connection between ancient craft and present moment was not lost on anyone in the room.
The food spread honored the traditional dairy foods of the holiday: cheeses, bagels, lox, blintzes, and cappuccinos. Magicians Eliyahu Joseph and Nussi Konig performed throughout.
The most emotional moment came during Torah reading. Inmates who had not received an aliyah in years were called up. One participant could not hold back tears. It was, as one organizer described it, warmth, respect, and sincere human connection — and a Kiddush Hashem inside walls that rarely see it.
